Brave Beyond Words (Willow Elementary): So You Want to Talk About Race (Winter, 2020)

As part of our continuing effort to bring Brave Conversations to local school communities, we are bringing our heartfelt examination of Ijeoma Oluo’s powerful book So You Want To Talk About Race to Willow Elementary teachers, staff, and parents. Oluo is an exceptional writer with straightforward solutions for engaging in difficult, crutial, and BRAVE conversations. If you’ve wondered how you can help combat racial inequality and are looking for a safe space to explore the issue, this book club is for you. No matter where you are on the path of racial education, let’s explore the author’s solutions for healing the divide together.

The book club will be held on four evening sessions from 5:30-7:00 pm: Tuesday January 7th (Chapters 1-4); Tuesday January 14th (Chapters 5-7); Tuesday January 21st (Chapters 8-12); Tuesday February 4th (Chapters 13-17). Participants are asked to attend all four sessions.

The cost of the workshop is $40. Please pay Beverly in the Willow Elementary front office by cash or check (made out to Willow Elementary).

If you missed the first run, we encourage you to sign up this time. We will hold a safe space to explore the book’s solutions for addressing racial inequality.

The book club will be held on three afternoon sessions from 3:30-5:00 pm: Tuesday September 24 (Chapters 1-6); Tuesday October 1 (Chapters 7-12); Tuesday October 15 (Chapters 13-17). Participants must attend all three sessions.

At the special request of members of the Isabella Bird Community School, we are bringing our heartfelt examination of Ijeoma Oluo’s powerful book So You Want To Talk About Race to the school community. This will be a safe place for teachers, staff, and parents to explore the author’s solutions for addressing racial inequality. The Brave Coalition was founded in 2016 following hate graffiti at Izzy B, and we are excited to host a Brave Beyond Words book club at the school.

The book club will be held on three afternoon sessions from 3:30-5:00 pm: Wednesday May 8 (Chapters 1-6); Monday May 13 (Chapters 7-12); Wednesday May 20 (Chapters 13-17).

Brave Beyond Words: Just Mercy

Please join us for the Brave Coalition’s inaugural Brave Beyond Words, a book club unlike any other.  This 3-week series will be an enthralling deep dive into Bryan Stevenson’s remarkable book Just Mercy: A Story of Justice and Redemption. The small-group setting will create a safe space for participants to have Brave Conversations and to honestly and courageously untangle themes of race, privilege, and justice. Space is limited to just 10 participants, who will experience a facilitator-led but group-driven discussion, a sense of community, and personal enrichment. Additional materials will allow for deeper discussion and understanding. Sign up with PayPal HERE.

Dates: Wednesday evenings, November 1 (Chapters 1-3); November 8 (Chapters 4-10), and November 15 (Chapters 11-16). 

Location: Turn A Page Book Shop, 9575 Montview Blvd, Aurora

Time: 7:00pm - 8:30pm

Cost: $30 for the 3-week session. This does not include a copy of the book, which participants must purchase in advance at a local bookstore or HERE
