Brave Beyond Words (Izzy B School): So You Want to Talk About Race

  • Isabella Bird Community School (map)
  • Google Calendar ICS

At the special request of members of the Isabella Bird Community School, we are bringing our heartfelt examination of Ijeoma Oluo’s powerful book So You Want To Talk About Race to the school community. This will be a safe place for teachers, staff, and parents to explore the author’s solutions for addressing racial inequality. The Brave Coalition was founded in 2016 following hate graffiti at Izzy B, and we are excited to host a Brave Beyond Words book club at the school.

The book club will be held on three afternoon sessions from 3:30-5:00 pm: Wednesday May 8 (Chapters 1-6); Monday May 13 (Chapters 7-12); Wednesday May 20 (Chapters 13-17).

Individuals with a connection to the school may REGISTER HERE. There is no cost for this program, but participants will need to purchase the book in advance (find it on Amazon here). Registration direct link:

Brave Beyond Words: Just Mercy

Please join us for the Brave Coalition’s inaugural Brave Beyond Words, a book club unlike any other.  This 3-week series will be an enthralling deep dive into Bryan Stevenson’s remarkable book Just Mercy: A Story of Justice and Redemption. The small-group setting will create a safe space for participants to have Brave Conversations and to honestly and courageously untangle themes of race, privilege, and justice. Space is limited to just 10 participants, who will experience a facilitator-led but group-driven discussion, a sense of community, and personal enrichment. Additional materials will allow for deeper discussion and understanding. Sign up with PayPal HERE.

Dates: Wednesday evenings, November 1 (Chapters 1-3); November 8 (Chapters 4-10), and November 15 (Chapters 11-16).

Location: Turn A Page Book Shop, 9575 Montview Blvd, Aurora

Time: 7:00pm - 8:30pm

Cost: $30 for the 3-week session. This does not include a copy of the book, which participants must purchase in advance at a local bookstore or HERE
